The Review

This is certainly a LCD television designed with style in mind. The LG 42SL80 focuses on a minimalist design giving an illusion of a nearly all-picture viewing experience with just a thin black frame surrounding the screen. The LG 42SL80's remote is superior to LG's standard fare and features backlit buttons and good spacing between keys. The LG 42SL80 utilizes the ultra high refresh rate of 240Hz, which, as of this writing, is the highest refresh rate available. A refresh rate this high nearly eliminates the subtle motion blurring to which some lower-end LCD televisions may be prone. No matter if we are talking high-end or low-end, LG always delivers when it comes to display options and the 42SL80 is no exception. The exceptional display options allow you to easily calibrate the brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and back-light; however, tweak freaks (i.e. those oh so selective users that enjoy tweaking every last aspect of the picture) may take issue with LG's implementation of its dejuddering process. LG’s dejudder feature, which serves to further reduce any blurring, forces you to simultaneously engage the motion smoothing effect. There is no need to worry though, as this will not affect the average user in any way and could only have any measurable effect on the most advanced and stringent of users. As is typical for many LG LCD televisions, the color accuracy of the 42SL80 is superb; however the black shades lack depth and ultimately hamper the color saturation. Additionally, unlike nearly all other LCD TVs, the LG 42SL80 has a glass screen, which reduces its performance in brightly-lit environment.
